Tomcat & Windows XP Troubleshooting SAP BusinessObjects XI 3.0

This post is about Russell Beech in discussion on the SAP Forum. SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise was installed on a machine running Windows XP. It was being used for development, POC and sales demo purposes. Windows XP was a constraint imposed by the standard build of the organisation that he was working for. Russell identified that the issue was a clash between Java components and Windows XP. This issue was becoming very time consuming and the solution was looking more and more like it needed a Java customisation. Not wanting to pursue that route Russell finally got permission to install Windows Server 2003. The problems were instantly solved. The forum thread is reproduced below as it gives useful insights into troubleshooting or go to http://forums.sdn.sap.com/message.jspa?messageID=6076352 to view it on the forum.

XI 3.0 Tomcat Service Will Not Start

I have installed Enterprise XI 3.0 from the Business Objects ESD site. I took the option to install Tomcat. The Tomcat service installed but will not start from the CCM or the .bat file.

I expected that as in previous releases Tomcat would be configured through the install. All other Business Objects services are running.

Has anyone had the same experience? Does anyone have a fix?

Best regards

Russ

SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise

SAP Business Objects Enterprise XI 3.1 is the industrial strength Business Intelligence Platform for large organisations. It is fully scalable using distributed architecture to enable Web Intelligence, Crystal Reports, Dashboards and other documents to be shared throughout the organisation. The number of users that it can scale to is dependent upon the hardware made available to it and the license model purchased. Its server based architecture means that it can handle high volume report access. Earlier versions of XI 3.1 are known as SAP Business Objects Enterprise XI and SAP Business Objects Enterprise XI R2. You can read more about Business Intelligence Platform Scalability here.

SAP BusinessObjects Crystal Reports

Crystal Reports 2008 is a dynamic Enterprise Reporting tool. The reports can be scheduled, shared and viewed within SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise. Its powerful chart engine helps the user visualize and explore corporate data and drill down through data hierarchies.

It is also possible to embed several other reports (sub reports) within a single Crystal Report or to fire off a sub report on demand when required. In this way a lot of information can be stored within a single report. Crystal Xcelsius Dashboards can also be embedded and called from within a Crystal Report on demand.

Crystal Reports has a very powerful formula editor which allows the use of coding with the Basic language. It is also excellent for printing presentation documents with its pixel perfect print engine. Crystal Reports can also connect to numerous data sources including SAP BusinessObjects universes and SAP R3.

However this tool is not an ad hoc tool like Web Intelligence or Voyager and it is not recommended that a user attempts to drag and drop fields in an ad hoc way. It requires some technical skill to develop with it beyond a simple report. That said, for Enterprise Reporting with large and complex reports it is a powerful workhorse. It utilises a cache server and provides page on demand functionality. For example if a report runs to 300 pages and the user requires page 197, then Crystal can serve up that single page without having to download the whole document.
